Director of Public Relations

Starting salary is $45,500 to $60,500 depending on qualifications and experience.

The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking resumes from creative individuals with a robust background in communications to lead its public relations activities. The Director of Public Relations leads the City's efforts to maintain excellent communication and education for our residents and the public at large in regard to City's events, rules and regulations, overall operations, and critical emergency communications. The Director of Public Relations is responsible for a wide variety of public communications to enhance the positive image of the City of Mt. Pleasant including marketing for City events, citizen outreach, website and social media content, and resident and employee newsletters. The Director of Public Relations acts as the liaison between all departments, gathering pertinent information for release to the public. This position reports to the Director of Finance and is a salaried, at-will position.

Excellent writing as well as verbal and non-verbal communication skills are essential to successful work with the City Commission, citizens, co-workers, property owners, businesses, and developers. The preferred candidate must also possess skills in media relations and website design and development. Equally important are a passion for community, fostering collaboration with a history of building inclusive communication processes, having an approachable personality, being highly motivated and self-directed with strong problem solving skills. Excellent time management and planning skills are also highly desirable in this fast paced position with multiple deadlines. Sharing knowledge with and mentoring public relations interns is also a responsibility of the role.

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field; videography and photography skills; social media experience; web design and content management experience. In addition, a minimum of two to four years of progressively responsible public or private sector marketing or communication experience or an equivalent combination of formal education and experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities is required.

Mt. Pleasant (SEV $532 million) is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The City is a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining its small town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016. When hosting special events, the population can swell to two or three times that number along with the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

Mt. Pleasant is also home to Central Michigan University's 18,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan Community College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to prepare for a career in health, business, or industrial technologies or transfer to a university. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school, and two high schools. There is one parochial and two charter schools. Downtown Mt. Pleasant boasts over 135 businesses that include remarkable specialty shops, art galleries, excellent and eclectic dining establishments, bars and bistros.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive. Offering a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, the City Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
