Assistant Director Department of Public Works

Starting salary is high $70's to low $80's, depending on qualifications and experience. 

The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking resumes from collaborative individuals with in-depth knowledge and management experience within municipal public works services. The Assistant Director for the Department of Public Works (DPW) is a salaried at-will employee who exercises independent judgment and decision-making responsibility while carrying out a wide variety of leadership roles and assignments. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, this position serves as the second in command of the Public Works Division and provides management oversite and mentoring to all the departments within the Public Works Division.

As a newly created position, this role will assist the Director and support the division teams on a large variety of tasks. Our current Director plans to retire in the next couple of years and we are looking for a strong person to step into this new role as Assistant Director and build a knowledge base in preparation for transition. Although we cannot promise you will be the next Director of Public Works for the City, we offer you this opportunity to learn, grow and show your abilities within the Assistant Director role as you prepare for what is next. We call upon this role to utilize a participatory management style, and seek a person who will lead, mentor and support departmental management within the functions of the Public Works division including, but not limited to; the Airport, Engineering, Street, Wastewater and Water. It is imperative that this role works toward continuous improvement in service delivery; manages daily operations and provides guidance to department heads; assists with consultant contracts; participates in the development and oversight of the division’s annual operating budgets and five-year capital improvement plan; mediates and works toward resolution of resident complaints and concerns, prepares and submits reports; maintains up-to-date knowledge in areas of responsibility; and attends City Commission and other meetings as requested.

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in public administration, management or related field with progressively responsible management or executive level experience in municipal public works administration sufficient to meet the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The American Public Works Association, Certified Public Works Professional-Management (CPWP-M) and/or Michigan Public Service Institute graduate, is preferred.

Mt. Pleasant (SEV $532 million) is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The City is a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining its small town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016. When hosting special events, the population can swell to two or three times that number along with the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

Mt. Pleasant is also home to Central Michigan University's 18,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan Community College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to prepare for a career in health, business, or industrial technologies or transfer to a university. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school, and two high schools. There is one parochial and two charter schools. Downtown Mt. Pleasant boasts over 135 businesses that include remarkable specialty shops, art galleries, excellent and eclectic dining establishments, bars and bistros.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive. Offering a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, the City Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
