City Assessor

The City of Mt. Pleasant is currently accepting applications for a certified MAAO (3) professional for the full-time position of City Assessor.  This complex department head position is appointed by the City Commission and reports to the Director of Finance/Treasurer.  The City Assessor works closely with other City departments to develop and maintain accurate and timely property value information for tax purposes, and to serve as a focal point linking many aspects of the City’s property-related information systems.  The City Assessor must possess strong communication skills and proven leadership competencies.

The City Assessor performs, or oversees, all work associated with preparation of, and the accounting for, the City’s various property tax rolls.  Additionally, the Assessor participates on the Neighborhood Resources Unit as committee member sharing information and assisting with research as needed by the Fire and Police Departments.  This position supervises one full-time Office Professional and one contracted MCAO who performs residential fieldwork.

The required minimum qualifications for this position are a Michigan Advanced Assessing Officer (MAAO) Level III Assessors Certificate; a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field; formal training in the principals, methods and techniques of real and personal property appraisal and assessment; and extensive knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing residential, commercial, industrial, and personal property appraisal and assessment.  This position requires a willingness to occasionally work weekends and evenings.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.  We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small town traditions while building a vital economy.  The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

Pleasant.  Our community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and one high school.  In addition, there is one k-12 Parochial and two Charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts.  Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive.  The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis.  In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking.  The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.

Starting salary in the upper $60,000’s to lower $70,000’s; a signing bonus and relocation support may be available, depending on qualifications.
