The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking a highly talented automotive and heavy equipment master mechanic, who is team and service-oriented to join our professional Street Department team. The Motor Pool Mechanic II position is the lead position within the motor pool and operates within the Department of Public Works. Working with a very talented team of Street Maintenance Specialists and reporting directly to the Street Superintendent, the Motor Pool Mechanic II position is challenged by a broad span of mechanical work in an environment where ingenuity and a team philosophy drives continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Proven ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with team members, colleagues, and the public regarding any aspect within the scope of responsibility; and to establish and maintain positive working relationships with the public and other employees. Uses proven problem solving techniques to resolve issues and conflict.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently and cooperatively plan, organize, prioritize, coordinate, and evaluate multiple motor pool activities; participate in building, developing and maintaining successful and professional work teams.
  • High School diploma and possession of State of Michigan Master Automobile Mechanic and Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic certifications required. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications for automobile, medium/heavy truck and/or truck equipment, engine machinist, and alternative fuel technician, desired. Must have a minimum of three years of responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance, one year shop manager/leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Continued possession of the necessary physical capabilities to safely perform the duties in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Code, Motor Carrier Safety Act, MIOSHA, and City guidelines.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the proper, safe, and efficient use of vehicles and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of streets, alleys, parking lots, and sidewalks, and the methods and terminology used in the department.
  • Continued possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (group A or B designation) with air brake and tank endorsements or ability to obtain such within 120 days of employment.
  • This position will be required to assist the Street Department with snow removal operations and other large physically demanding projects on an as needed basis. For example; operating equipment such as the backhoe, loader, dump truck, vactor truck, street sweeper, chipper, and other heavy equipment. The position requires the physical ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in extreme weather. Occasionally, working in confined spaces such as manholes, wet wells and below ground pumping stations is required.

This full-time benefitted position requires a proven safe driving record and the ability to obtain or the possession of, a group A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tank endorsements. Work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Work outside of the regular work shift, on a call-in basis, and in emergency situations will be required.

Starting wage: $17.01/hour - $17.20/hour, plus an hourly add on of up to $3.44/hour depending on the number of Master Automotive and Heavy Equipment mechanic certificates as outlined in the TPOAM Contract. The 2018 top pay negotiated for the Motor Pool Mechanic II position is $20.61/hour, plus $3.44/hour for mechanic certificates for a total of $24.05/hour. Wage increases are provided annually as negotiated and outlined in the TPOAM Union Contract.

To remain employed with the City of Mt. Pleasant all individuals hired as a Motor Pool Mechanic II must continually possess their CDL as noted above, successfully complete additional training with the Street Department as designated by the Street Superintendent, and hold the required mechanical licensure during their time of employment.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

We are also home to Central Michigan University’s 27,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan Community College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
