Wow, what an exciting time at the City of Mt. Pleasant! Due to upcoming employee retirements we have two (2) full-time Office Professional I positions available with the Utility Billing department. That is where you come into the picture. We are seeking professional, customer service focused and detailed oriented individuals with high integrity and a sense of service to join our team!

The educational requirements for the positions are flexible; a high school diploma and two years of responsible clerical experience, or two years of college and six months of responsible clerical experience, is required.

The successful candidate must possess demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; specifically, Word and Excel.
  • Experience in BS&A, is preferred
  • A quick learner and adaptable to a variety of software programs
  • A high level of 10-key accuracy within a fast-paced environment
  • Proven skills in; general math, general accounting, data entry, communication (both verbal and written), problem solving, being detailed oriented, organized, phone etiquette, and working successfully in a team-based environment
  • Ability to multi-task and share work responsibilities with co-workers, be flexible and take pride in the final work product
  • Experience working in public service, local government, providing clerical support to a variety of customers with a professional and positive attitude when dealing with challenging customer service situations, is preferred

The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., working a standard 40-hour work week.

Typical duties within the UTILITY BILLING positions:

  • First point of contact for customer service in the Utility Billing and Cashiering department
  • Work in a confidential manner and protect customer data with integrity
  • Assist with official financial and tax record keeping
  • Provide internal and external customer service by assisting utility customers, contractors, residents and students
  • Prepare and process monthly utility billings, handle the water shutoff process, such as mailing notices, creating door tags and working with the water department on official shutoffs, creating final billings for customers and data entry related to all existing and new accounts
  • Provides perpetual professional and courteous customer service
  • Lead and train Water Meter Readers on meter reading responsibilities, such as routes, handheld reading devices, importing data and export customer information for billing process
  • Handle and process credit card and ACH payments
  • Work closely with the Water Department team to schedule service appointments, and updates customer information in the computer system
  • Process miscellaneous receivables
  • Complete cash receipting
  • Data entry
  • Prepare and collect property taxes and payments
  • Utilize Microsoft Suite (Word and Excel), Outlook and BS&A on a daily basis

The City of Mt. Hiring wage is $16.62/hour to $17.17/hour, depending on qualifications. The 2019 maximum pay for an Office Professional I is $20.24/hour. Maximum pay is received after one or two years of employment, depending on the rate of pay received upon hire. Wage rates are adjusted in accordance with the TPOAM Union Contract. Advancement to higher level Office Professional classifications with increased compensation is available, upon an individual’s desire to achieve that growth. Such advancement opportunities involve additional skills testing and completion of the probationary period. Refer to the TPOAM Union Contract for additional wage information.

Not all applicants tested will be invited for an interview.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small-town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

We are also home to Central Michigan University’s 27,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30-minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
