Wow, what an exciting time at the City of Mt. Pleasant! Due to upcoming employee retirements we have one (1) full-time Office Professional I position, which is shared between the Assessor and the Clerk’s department. The educational requirements for the position are flexible; a high school diploma and two years of responsible clerical experience, or two years of college and six months of responsible clerical experience, is required.

The successful candidate must possess demonstrated proficiency in the following areas:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong communication skills - problem solver, a good listener who can easily explain a technical item in a simple manner
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; specifically, Word and Excel
  • Experience in BS&A, QVF, RMS or QGIS, is preferred
  • A quick learner and adaptable to a variety of software programs
  • Able to understand and apply legal requirements as mandated by the State of Michigan for both Assessing and Clerk functions
  • Proven skills in; general math, general accounting, data entry, communication (both verbal and written), being detailed oriented, work organization, phone etiquette, reading legal descriptions or land descriptions, working successfully in a team-based environment and serving a diverse population
  • Ability to multi-task and share work responsibilities with co-workers, be flexible and take pride in the final work product
  • Experience working in public service, local government, providing clerical support, voter registration, document verification and support to a variety of customers with a professional and positive attitude when dealing with challenging customer service situations, is preferred

The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., working a standard 40-hour work week.

Typical duties within the ASSESSOR and CLERK positions:

  • First point of contact for customer service in the Assessing department, with primary support functions to the Clerk’s office and additional support during election events
  • Work in a confidential manner and protect customer data with integrity
  • Review and process incoming deeds, property transfer affidavits, and principal residence exemptions
  • Provide internal and external customer service by assisting Assessor and Clerk customers, contractors, residents and students
  • Work with Building department on permits and validate information prior to entering into the BS&A assessing system
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail for City Hall; help prepare mass mailings, coordinate mail schedule and assist city staff
  • Provides perpetual professional and courteous customer service
  • Various administrative duties related to data processing, meeting preparation, scheduling, external conference room reservations, assessing report creation and editing
  • Primary back-up for the Clerk department Office Professional position
  • Assist residents and students with processing parking ticket payments, accounting balancing, dispute resolution, and education on ordinance
  • Answer cemetery questions from a variety of sources, accept calls to arrange funerals with our municipal cemetery, assist in scheduling and communicating with our parks department staff
  • Participate in the preparation, implementation and execution of all Election process and customer service
  • Answer City’s main phone line providing general answers to inquiries and transferring to appropriate staff
  • Assist the Treasurer’s department with deposit process and banking drop-offs
  • Accounts Payable Check Distribution - Internal process
  • Utilize Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook), BS&A, Qualified Voter File (QVF), QGIS for cemetery processes and Record Management System (RMS) on a daily basis

The City of Mt. Hiring wage is $16.62/hour to $17.17/hour, depending on qualifications. The 2019 maximum pay for an Office Professional I is $20.24/hour. Maximum pay is received after one or two years of employment, depending on the rate of pay received upon hire. Wage rates are adjusted in accordance with the TPOAM Union Contract. Advancement to higher level Office Professional classifications with increased compensation is available, upon an individual’s desire to achieve that growth. Such advancement opportunities involve additional skills testing and completion of the probationary period. Refer to the TPOAM Union Contract for additional wage information.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small-town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

We are also home to Central Michigan University’s 27,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30-minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
