Street Department Superintendent
The City of Mt. In addition to the Superintendent, the Street department is staffed by ten highly skilled and experienced Street Maintenance Specialists and one Motor Pool Mechanic, who function closely with a three person Engineering Staff, two Office Professionals, four other DPW Department Heads and the Division Director. This position works very closely with many departments throughout the City and in an integral part of City infrastructure maintenance and repair. The Street Department is responsible for 75.52 miles of city streets. Beyond working on major Capital Improvement Projects, the department maintains and works to improve the street system, sidewalks, and the sanitary and storm sewer systems associated with the streets. The department is also responsible for the street sweeping, snow removal, sign maintenance, leaf pickup, tree removal and trimming, spring tree planting, brush collection, and the Christmas tree pick-up program.
The normal business hours for the Department of Public Works front office are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, the hours for this position will vary. This is a salaried exempt position and can be expected to work a minimum of 45 to 50 hours a week. Starting salary is in the mid to upper $60’s, depending on qualifications.
Successful candidate must be passionate about employee development, possess strong communication skills and extensive knowledge of street maintenance processes and best practices, as well as have a good sense of humor. Municipal or public sector and union environment experience is preferred. The ability to adapt and accept change in priorities with ease; provide guidance and delegate responsibilities to a strong team in a fast-paced environment, work with others to develop efficiencies within the department functions and across department lines, be available and flexible with work schedule, understand MDOT regulations, ACT 51 Funding, experience in budgeting, CIP, Cost Estimating, Bid processes and capable of working on multiple projects and issues concurrently. Possession and continued maintenance of a Valid Michigan driver’s license, Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (group A or B designation), and a continued safe driving record in accordance with the Michigan Vehicle Code and Motor Carrier Safety Act and City policies. Positive and proven abilities in project management, problem-solving and public speaking with a background in excellent customer service skills, is desired.

CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan Community College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. Our community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.
The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
