STREET MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST I

The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking a team and service-oriented individual to join its professional Street Department work team. The Street Department operates utilizing a team philosophy and is continually striving to improve work processes through team effort. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work as a team leader or member and perform a broad range of maintenance, construction, installation, inspection, cleaning, and repair activities related to the city street, water, sanitary storm and sewer systems, and other public utilities and properties. The position performs asphalt and concrete cuts and removals; lays and finishes concrete sidewalks, curbs and gutters; and plows and removes ice and snow from streets, parking lots, and sidewalks. The Street Maintenance Specialist I operates equipment such as the backhoe, loader, dump truck, vactor truck, street sweeper, chipper, and other heavy equipment. The position requires the physical ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in extreme weather. Occasionally, working in confined spaces such as manholes, wet wells and below ground pumping stations is required. The Street Maintenance Specialist I is responsible for conducting routine safety inspections, cleaning, and performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment, tools, and vehicles. Work requires the use of asphalt and concrete cutting saws, jackhammers, air compressors and other hand tools. The Street Maintenance Specialist I will use the computer system for Miss Dig, GIS, and other tasks as related to field work.

This full-time benefitted position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of one year's general laborer or skilled trades experience. Applicants must have a safe driving record and possess a group A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tank endorsements. Mechanical and electrical experience is preferred. Work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Work outside of the regular work shift, on a call-in basis, and in emergency situations will be required. Starting wage: $15.87/hour - $16.39/hour, depending on qualifications. Top pay for the Street Maintenance Specialist I is received after one or two years of employment, depending on the rate of pay received upon hire. The 2017 top pay for the position is $18.18/hour. Additional wage increases are provided annually as outlined in the TPOAM Union Contract.

To remain employed with the City of Mt. Pleasant all individuals hired as a Street Maintenance Specialist I must successfully complete the Street Maintenance Specialist II training program within a two-year period from the date of hire as a Street Maintenance Specialist I. Once promoted to a Street Maintenance Specialist II, a wage increase will be provided as outlined in the Union Contract. The 2017 pay rates for a Street Maintenance Specialist II: one year pay step is $17.84/hour and the two year pay step (top pay) is $20.96/hour. Additional wage increases are provided annually as outlined in the TPOAM Union Contract.

Selected applicants will complete a written test on Friday, October 27, 2017. Not all applicants tested will be invited for an interview. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for November 8-9, 2017.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan Community College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
