WASTEWATER TREATMENT OPERATOR

The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking a knowledgeable, energetic, and team-oriented individual to join its professional Wastewater Department team. The City of Mt. Pleasant Wastewater Treatment Plant team operates a 2.5 MGD fixed-film plant serving the population of the City of Mt. Pleasant. The plant is operated and maintained by six licensed Treatment Operators and a Plant Supervisor utilizing a team philosophy which values the contributions of each individual team member.

This position is a Monday through Friday shift working 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a rotating weekend schedule that occurs every sixth week creating two three-day weekends on either end of a 10 day working stretch. Employee must also be available for call-ins, after hours, wet weather events, and occasional holidays.

Minimum qualifications for this position include basic mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and computer skills in addition to a high school diploma. A highly qualified candidate would have a demonstrated skill set and licensure as it pertains to wastewater in process control, laboratory analysis, mechanical and electrical maintenance, SCADA & PLC controls, construction equipment, industrial pre-treatment, storm water, knowledge of common Microsoft Office suite applications with a focus on Excel, Word and Outlook, CMMS, GIS or other related software, and a degree in water/wastewater treatment technologies or related fields.

Employees in this position receive both on the job training and industry specific learning opportunities for continuing education to maintain licensure. Tuition reimbursement is available for job-related college coursework.

A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record required. Following hire, applicant must possess or obtain a valid Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (EGLE) Class “D” Operator’s Certificate within two EGLE testing cycles from the date of hire.

The 2020 starting base wage is $18.92/hr. (start step) to $19.73/hr. (one-year step), depending on qualifications. Top base pay for 2020 is $21.19/hr. (two-year step). Top step pay is received after one or two years of employment, depending on the rate of pay received upon hire. The hourly rate of pay is increased by procurement of EGLE state licenses (2020 rates): D-$2.14/hr.; C-$2.63/hr.;
B-$3.34/hr.; A-$4.04/hr. Licenses are not cumulative.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

We are also home to Central Michigan University’s 27,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their medical school. Mid-Michigan College’s Mt. Pleasant campus is an option for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business, or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.

Process Timeline:

Selected applicants will undergo qualification testing in basic chemistry, electrical, math, mechanical skills, and Microsoft Excel. Testing is tentatively scheduled for Monday, August 17, 2020. Not all applicants tested will receive an interview. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for August 26 and 27, 2020. Applicants selected for testing and interview will be contacted via phone.
