Water System Operator

The City of Mt. Pleasant is interested in hiring an individual who is team-oriented, flexible, self-motivated, open-minded, and eager to learn the position of Water System Operator within its professional Water Department team.

Two positions are available and they will fill the following shifts on a first hired basis:

  • Position 1 - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday - 7:30am to 4:00pm, Wednesday afternoon shift, off work on Friday and Saturday.
  • Position 2 - Tuesday - Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm, Saturday afternoon shift, off work on Sunday and Monday.

Afternoon shift may vary, some examples of hours worked in the afternoon are: Noon to 8:00pm, 1:00pm - 9:00pm, and 2:00pm to 10:00pm. Work hours are dictated by the demand for water and other variables.

Candidates must have demonstrated mechanical and electrical skills, as well as solid knowledge in the areas of plumbing, math, basic biology and chemistry, and blue print reading. A general understanding of computer and software systems is required. A valid Michigan Driver’s License and a safe driving record are required. This full-time benefitted position requires a minimum of a high school degree or equivalent with course work in mathematics, basic chemistry, lab processes, and computer usage is required. A new employee is required to currently possess or attain an F-4 Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) certification within two MDEQ testing cycles from the date of hire.

The 2018 starting base wage is $18.36 to $18.89/hour, depending upon qualifications. The current top base pay rate is $20.29/hour. Top base pay is received after one or two years of employment, depending on the rate of pay received upon hire. Wage and license rates (MDEQ license pay is as follows: S-1, $.86/hr.; F-4, $1.88/hr.; F-3, $2.32/hr.; F-2, $3.00/hr.; F-1 $3.73/hr.) are increased annually in accordance with the TPOAM Union Agreement. Licenses are non-cumulative with the exception of the S-1. A $.50/hour shift differential applies to regularly scheduled hours worked between 4:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The City of Mt. Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

We are also home to Central Michigan University’s 27,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan Community College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30-minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
