Parks & Public Spaces Maintenance Technician

The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking resumes from team and service-oriented individuals to join its Parks Department team. The Department is staffed by a full-time Director of Parks and Public Spaces, Parks and Public Spaces Coordinator, and two full-time Parks and Grounds employees. In addition, numerous seasonal employees assist staff during peak season. The department operates utilizing a team philosophy and values the contributions of each individual team member.

The work schedule of this seasonal not to exceed nine months position is generally Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Flexibility in schedule is required as there is likelihood of occasional weekend and holiday work. Qualifications include a high school diploma and a minimum of one year’s general laborer and small engine and equipment repair and maintenance experience. The wage is $15 per hour and the position is eligible for health and prescription insurance coverage.

Position responsibilities include, under the general supervision of an employee of a higher classification, a focus on small engine and equipment maintenance and repair, operation and maintenance of a variety of motorized and non-motorized equipment routinely associated with the upkeep of parks and public spaces. Performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks requiring considerable physical effort related to the safe and efficient maintenance of municipal buildings, parks, cemetery, and grounds. The position also guides seasonal and variable hour employees in safely performing a wide range of tasks and requires the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize per assignment.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 26,016, but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

We are also home to Central Michigan University’s 27,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their newly opened Medical School. Mid-Michigan Community College has a Mt. Pleasant Campus for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business or industrial technologies. In addition, five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school and two high schools. In addition, there is one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30 minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. In addition, the City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
