Solid Waste Ordinance Changes

At the August 10, 2015 City Commison meeting, the proposed changes to the Solid Waste Ordinance were passed by the Mt. Pleasant City Commission.

How do the changes to the ordinance affect me?

(1) It requires curbside pickup of recycling for rooming houses and multi-family homes in three areas for a one year pilot period.

Those areas are:

A) Bellows Street to High Street from the railroad tracks to Mission Street

B) High Street to Michigan Street from the railroad tracks to Mission Street

C) Downtown to Pickard Avenue from Island Park to Brown Street

The ordinance requires residents in those areas to pay a monthly charge of $1.50 for every six (6) licensed renters which would be billed on the monthly utility bill. One (1) free recycling bin would be provided for every six (6) residents. The city’s recycling contractor would then collect recycling on designated days.

2) It provides an option for all rooming houses, multi-family dwellings, and condominium associations anywhere in the city to use the city bag/tag refuse collection. Currently rooming houses, multi-family dwellings, and condominium associations, by ordinance, must use private refuse collection companies.

3) It requires trash containers and recycle bins be kept out of view from the street at all times except from 5:00 p.m. the night before collection until midnight the day of collection. The ordinance changes also prohibit overloading trash containers.

In the ordinance, there are penalties for non-compliance.

The ordinance changes will take effect 30 days after adoption. The adoption date was August 10, 2015.
