Mt. Pleasant Police Department

FIRST THINGS FIRST...

You can avoid problems with the police by being aware of state laws and local ordinances that pertain especially to college-age people:

  • Possession of alcohol

  • Operating a vehicle under the influence

  • Disturbing the peace

  • Hosting or attending a "nuisance party"

ATTENDING A PARTY

  • Use the "buddy system" when going to and from a party.

  • If you have friends who are visiting, stay with them.  They may not be familiar with the area.

  • Keep noise to a minimum when going to and from a party.

  • Use a restroom, not the great outdoors!

  • Dispose of your trash properly.  Litter really looks bad.

  • Don't leave a party with somebody you don't know.

  • Avoid vandalism, fights, or any other conduct that annoys or endangers others or results in obscene or indecent behavior.

  • You can be cited or arrested by simply attending a nuisance party.

We Offer These Practical Party Tips

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION

  • It is illegal to possess open alcohol on sidewalks or city streets.

  • If you plan on drinking, remember that you are responsible for your actions.

  • NEVER leave your drink unattended or accept a drink from a stranger.

  • If you think someone has alcohol poisoning, call 911 immediately!

  • ALWAYS use a designated driver.

IF YOU EVER HOST A PARTY

  • Inform your neighbors beforehand, and be honest about the number of people attending the party.

  • Designate a sober contact person to oversee the party.

  • Contact the police and let them know who the contact person is.

  • Keep music and noise to a minimum.

  • Keep all people inside your apartment or house.

  • Be watchful of people leaving your party.  If they are highly intoxicated, you can be held responsible.

  • Pick up all trash immediately after the party.  Your neighbors will appreciate it, and you will not be fined for the litter.

  • Be courteous when dealing with neighbors, police officers, or other enforcement officials.

  • Remember that police can cite or arrest you for hosting a nuisance party.
