Every spring the Street Department plants
over 150 trees in the right-of-way throughout the city as
part of the Urban Forestry Plan. The goal of this plan is to
establish a diverse population of street trees in the city
to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the streets and to
increase the well being of our citizens. Trees not only
supply shade and beauty to citizens, but also improve air
quality by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air.
Under the Urban Forestry Plan, a Spring
Tree Planting Program is offered for citizens to get a free
tree planted in front of their property. Each parcel and/or
property owner is allowed one tree per year. The street crew
will determine the best location for the tree in the
right-of-way. Once the tree is planted, the property owner
is asked to keep the tree watered during the summer months.
Fill out a
Tree Application
and return it to the Public Works Building at 1303 N.
Franklin Street by December 31 of the current year for
planting the following spring.

If a resident wishes to plant their own
tree in the right-of-way, a permit must first be obtained
from the Public Works office. There is no charge for the
permit.
