The Street Department staff consists of the Street
Superintendent, the Analyst/Assistant to the Superintendent,
10 Heavy Equipment Operators, and 2 Motor Pool Mechanics.
Seasonal workers are hired to assist the crew during the
summer months. As a team, these employees are responsible
for over 70 miles of city streets.
The Street Department is responsible for maintenance and
improvements to the street system, including the sidewalks,
sanitary and storm sewer systems associated with the
streets. A large number of miscellaneous functions fall
under the responsibility of the street department as well.
Among those are: street sweeping, snow removal, sign
maintenance, sanitary sewer cleaning, leaf pickup, street
repair, sidewalk replacement, tree removal and trimming,
spring tree planting, the brush collection program, and the
Christmas tree pick-up program.
This department also provides many construction services
in conjunction with the City's Capital Improvement Program
such as preparatory patching and excavation prior to paving
by outside contractors. The Street Department provides
equipment and operators to other departments as well. In
addition, the Street Department provides the Airport with
grass mowing, storm sewer maintenance, and specialized
maintenance not performed by Airport Managers.
The Motor Pool and Central Stores operations are also
housed within the Street Department. The Motor Pool provides
and maintains vehicles for all departments within the city.
The fleet consists of 194 trucks, utility vehicles, heavy
equipment vehicles, and miscellaneous equipment serviced
in-house by the Motor Pool Mechanics. Central stores is an
internal inventory of maintenance materials, miscellaneous
supplies, and small tools that are available for use by each
of the departments within the Division of Public Works as
well as other departments throughout the City.
