Open houses planned for proposed Zoning Ordinance changes

Dec. 6, 2013 - Two open houses have been planned to provide members of the public with information on potential amendment to the Zoning Ordinance relating to rehabilitation and redevelopment of housing in the area on either side of S. Washington Street and S. Main Street between Bellows and High Streets.

The Mt. Pleasant’s Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals have been working to promote rehabilitation and redevelopment of housing in the city, particularly in the area noted above. Proposed projects have been reviewed and approved under the authority in the City Zoning Ordinance designed to lessen nonconforming uses and structures.

The City Commission asked the Planning Commission to revise the Zoning Ordinance to establish more formal procedures for review of redevelopment proposals intended to reduce existing non-conformities while potentially increasing density. The city has hired a consultant to help draft changes to the Ordinance.

The consultant will be holding two open houses to provide members of the public with information on the current process and alternatives being considered as we prepare a potential amendment to the Zoning Ordinance.  We would appreciate your input on both the appropriate process to use and development standards to aim for in future reviews.

Please join our consultant, Doug Piggott of Rowe Professional Services, and city staff at one of the specified times/dates below:

  • January 14, 2014 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the City Hall Commission Chambers
  • January 23, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the City Hall Commission Chambers

Those who are interested in this discussion but are unable to attend either of the open houses listed above may contact Becky Murphy in the Community Services office at 989-779-5347 to set up a time to relay ideas and/or concerns to the consultant.
