Office Professional - Police Records

The City of Mt. Pleasant is seeking an individual with experience in criminal justice records, who is detail oriented, organized, and proficient in a variety of clerical support functions and computer skills. The Office Professional plays a critical role in the process of documenting criminal cases as dictated by our police officer’s and properly processing the information as mandated by criminal justice standards.

A high school diploma and two years of responsible clerical experience, or two years of college and six months of responsible clerical experience are required. The successful candidate must possess demonstrated proficiency of Microsoft Office Suite, applicable computer software applications and hardware, problem solving skills, and enjoy working in a team-based environment. Experience working in criminal justice records, Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN), transcribing police or other detailed reports, and a general understanding of the court system, is preferred.

The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The major responsibilities include:

  • Providing excellent customer service while performing the following business window responsibilities:
    • Handling, prioritizing, screening all DPS phone calls from the general public, law enforcement agencies, businesses, courts, and other City offices;
    • Processing all initial paperwork for the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Coordinator;
    • Performing background checks for Federal, State, and local law enforcement, military, probation, and parole; and
    • Monitor and operate police radio.
  • Transcription and typing of investigative police reports, affidavits, warrant requests, search warrants, and processing juvenile petitions.
  • Utilizing the Michigan State Police Michigan Criminal Justice Information Network (MiCJIN) Portal to perform the following functions:
    • Entering and editing information related to the Michigan Sex Offender Registry;
    • Processing gun license to purchase permits;
    • Entering gun registrations for civilians and dealers;
    • Accessing and printing Michigan driver license information and photos; and
    • Lab report copies to officers, assigned Prosecutor, and original report.
  • Utilizing the Michigan State Police Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) to perform a variety of functions, including:
    • Entering stolen property, including stolen vehicles;
    • Entering, editing, and removing wanted person files;
    • Entering, editing, and removing missing person files;
    • Accessing Federal and State criminal history record information (CHRI);
    • Accessing Michigan and out-of-state driver license information; and
    • Administrative messages to confirm LEIN entries.
  • Update, maintain, and access records utilizing the Central Square OSSI Records Management System for the following record types:
    • Law reports;
    • Arrest reports;
    • Traffic citations;
    • Traffic accidents;
    • Warrants;
    • Vehicles;
    • People; and
    • Daily record review.

Hiring wage is $17.64/hour to $18.22/hour, depending on qualifications. The 2022 maximum pay for an Office Professional I is $21.48/hour. Maximum pay is available after one or two years of employment, depending on the rate of pay received upon hire. Wage rate information is available in the TPOAM union contract. Advancement to higher level Office Professional classification with increased compensation is available. Such advancement opportunities involve skills testing.

  • Data entry;
  • Microsoft Windows general skills;
  • Microsoft Excel;
  • Microsoft Word; and
  • Typing.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. There is also one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30-minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. The City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
