This exciting opportunity has become available following a series of employee transitions and retirements. We are seeking applications and resumes from strong leaders who are energetic, self-directed, team-oriented, and flexible to fill the position of Water Treatment Plant Superintendent. The Mt. Pleasant Water Department is staffed by one Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, who leads six Water Plant Operators in the treatment facility, there is also a Distribution Supervisor, who leads three Water Distribution Operators in the field. Both the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent and the Distribution Supervisor report directly to the Deputy Director of the Department of Public Works. The plant operates two shifts, seven days a week with six Operators. The distribution and water treatment plant teams maintain 100 miles of water main and a state-of-the-art lime-softening treatment plant that began operation in December of 1995. The plant is an 8MGD lime/caustic softening plant that is operated using a SCADA system. The Water Department teams operate and maintain the treatment plant, the distribution system, three well fields, two reservoirs, two elevated tanks, and a high service pump station. The Water Treatment Plant Superintendent works closely with the Distribution Supervisor, the Utility Billing Supervisor and the DPW Deputy Director to coordinate, plan, schedule, operate and maintain the functionality and high quality of the water, all while providing excellent customer service to our water consumers.

The successful candidate will be strong leader, who is a good communicator, inclusive, flexible, analytical, organized, and capable of working on multiple projects and issues concurrently. Must be able to adapt and accept change in priorities with ease, provide guidance and direction to a strong and highly certified team in a fast-paced environment, work with others to develop efficiencies within the department and across department lines, provide excellent customer service, and demonstrate strong leadership and mentoring skills. Must be passionate about the water treatment profession and possess a strong knowledge of water treatment processes, operations and management best practices, and Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) regulations. A sense of humor, strong team work ethics and excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to the success of this position.

The Superintendent must be technically skilled. We are looking for a candidate with an EGLE F-1 is preferred, or an F-2 license with the ability to test and obtain the F-1 within one-year is required, at least five years progressively responsible experience, two years of which must be at plant management/leadership level, is preferred. At a minimum, one year of experience in water softening plant operations is preferred.

Bachelor’s Degree in public health, public administration, biology, or related science field, is preferred. Collegiate training in a related field with formal EGLE training in water treatment plant system operation, maintenance and testing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A valid driver’s license and a safe driving record required.

The standard office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with flexibility. Additional hours are to be expected for various circumstances and emergency situations.

To be effective and connected with the Mt. Pleasant community, we request that the Superintendent live locally within 12 months of hire, reside and maintain principle domicile within the limits of Isabella County or within 20 miles from the nearest city limit, whichever is greater.

Starting Salary in the mid $80,000’s; a signing bonus and relocation support available, depending on qualifications.

Mt. Pleasant is a growing and financially stable community located in the geographic center of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. We are a warm and friendly community dedicated to retaining our small-town traditions while building a vital economy. The area population officially stands at 21,688 but can swell to two or three times that number due to special events and the approximate 30,000 daily visitors to the Soaring Eagle Resort and Casino located at the east City limits.

We are also home to Central Michigan University's 14,000 plus students and many of its employees. CMU offers more than 170 programs at the Bachelor, Master, and Specialist Degree levels, as well as their Medical School. Mid-Michigan College's Mt. Pleasant Campus is an option for those who wish to transfer to a university or prepare for a career in health, business, or industrial technologies. Five other colleges and/or universities are within 45 miles of Mt. Pleasant. This community is dedicated to education and offers seven neighborhood schools, one middle school, and two high schools. There is also one parochial and two charter schools.

The Mt. Pleasant community provides an abundance of recreational and cultural opportunities ranging from hockey to chamber music concerts. Golfers are especially pleased with the 13 courses available within a 30-minute drive. The City Parks and Recreation Department offers a wide range of recreational programs for all ages, including youth soccer, softball, golf, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. The City operates and maintains 11 parks comprising 300 acres, offering venues for picnicking, swimming, fishing, canoing, and hiking. The Isabella County park system adds another 900 acres with similar opportunities as well as camping and cross-country skiing.
